We were treated to a masterclass in baking bread today by Ms. O'Lone. We learned all about the ingredients and equipment we need to bake both white bread and brown bread. We had been learning about 'arán donn' in Irish so it was a treat to bake our own brown bread to have with 'im agus subh'. We also learned about how the bread rises and how to check if the bread is fully baked by knocking on the bottom of the bread. Everyone got a chance to participate in the bread making process through preparing ingredients, using the equipment to measure as well as mixing the ingredients and kneading the dough. I think all of 2nd class would agree that the bread tasted DELICIOUS!
Halloween is nearly here! We had a busy afternoon preparing our pumpkin to be carved. We had a pumpkin designing contest this week to decide what type of eyes, nose and mouth our pumpkin would get and everyone did a fantastic job. We were amazed at how many seeds were inside. Welcome to Daisies, Jimmy the Pumpkin!
We had a great time during maths week. We learned about problem solving strategies and worked with a partner to solve problems. We also played some of our favourite maths games as well as some new ones. We are learning to count in 2's, 3's 5's and 10's so we really enjoyed the 'Skip Counting Snail' as well as the group counting game. We also tried out the Roll, Build and Solve addition game and used dienes blocks to show our working out. Great work everyone! We have been exploring patterns using concrete materials, pictures as well as using numbers. Our task was to see what we could use around the room to create different patterns. We had great fun!
We have been working very hard in maths! We are learning how to use different strategies to build fluency in our addition and subtraction facts. One of our strategies is to build up to ten when adding 9. For example, 9+4 is the same as 10 +3. We explored this strategy using ten frames. We also explored using this strategy to add 8 and 7 too. We love to perform in second class! We worked together in groups to come up with an original composition using different percussion instruments. We explored using patterns and repetition when creating music. Well done to everyone!
