Last week we took part in Science week which was happening in schools all over Ireland. We conducted different experiments everyday and explored the area of technology and engineering which is part of the STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). In one of our experiments we observed how water travels. We used food colouring to help the travelling water become more visible. We were amazed at how quick the water travelled through the tissue. Our next experiment involved using magnets and paperclips. We placed the paperclip in a bowl of water to see if the water would effect the magnetic energy. We learned that the paperclip would still be attracted to the magnet even though it was in water. We had fun making the paperclip dance! We had lots of fun creating a racing car game with our partners. We stuck a paper clip to the back of our paper car, we then used a magnet underneath the page to move the car along the race track. We are so lucky that in Scoil na Naomh Uilig we have opportunities to use Ipads. We explored apps such as Lightbot which is a coding game in which we must input instructions in order to help the robot get to the chosen location. We really enjoyed coding and had the opportunity to explore it even further using Beebots.
Before the holidays we enjoyed our Witches Walk around the school building. We made such a great effort dressing up in our Halloween costumes. We had great fun playing some traditional Halloween games like bobbing for apples, find the coin in the flour and apple on a string. We even got to sample some Báirín Breac. We hope you like our costumes.
As one season ends and another begins we looked back on some of the creative activities we completed around the theme of Autumn. We integrated subjects such as English, Science and Art to create acrostic poems, spaghetti hedgehogs and writing based on our five senses.
We are working very hard across all subject areas. From Maths to Art we try to make our learning as fun and as interesting as possible. Here are some photos of how we learn Maths through playing games. We also like to problem solve in groups by making posters and using helpful Maths resources.
We are so excited to begin 2nd class with our new teacher Ms Williams. Throughout the year we will post some news and pictures about the learning that takes place in our class. We hope you enjoy reading our blog.
