It came without ribbons. It came without tags.
It came without packages, boxes or bags.

student council elections 2020

The election of our new 3rd and 6th class Student Council members will take place this Thursday, November 26th.

A huge well done to all of the candidates who have made a tremendous effort over the past few weeks, working hard to earn their classmates' votes by designing impressive campaign posters and giving very convincing speeches! We are lucky to have so many motivated, responsible & enthusiastic students here in SNU. The very best of luck to each of you! 🌟

Take a look at some of their brilliant & creative work below:

Thank You

Hi all,

One final message from the Student Council before the summer break.

Firstly we want to thank you all for engaging with all of the challenges set over the past few weeks. It has been really nice to be in touch with you all for a reason other than just sending work samples and the dances, pictures, recipes, baking and active week effort certainly brought smiles to our faces and reminded us of all of the great things which go on at SNU. It shows what a talented school we are and what you all are capable of. We also want to thank your parents for helping in this interaction. It hasn't been easy for them having to help out, take pictures and send emails while having a lot of other things to do so we say a big thanks to them also.

As the teachers involved we would like to thank all of the members of the council for their effort this year. The efforts you made in getting elected, attending meetings, helping at school, creating messages and leading the challenges show why your classmates chose you for the job in the first place. It has been great working with you all.

A special mention must go to the 6th class members of the Council who will move onto secondary school after the summer. Within the group you showed leadership, drive and commitment but also were fair and inclusive of the members from the younger classes. Your work is greatly appreciated by us all. Thank you Dominic, Katie, Liam, James and Izabela!

Thanks again to everyone for your interaction over the past few months and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. Enjoy your well earned break this summer.

Ms. Dowling and Mr. Lalor

Active Week Challenge

Hi Everyone,

So the results are in. Boosted by some people who sent their entire weeks worth of distance in on Friday we almost managed to reach the 1000km mark. This is the equivalent of making it to Luxembourg. Well done to you all for your big effort all week!

In the team competition the early work of the Ravens proved to be key and meant they finished in 1st place. Well done to everyone in 2nd and 3rd classes for being the most active all week. They ended up 38km clear of the Eagles (6th/JI) in 2nd, while the Falcons were 3rd (4th and 1st classes) and the Hawks (5th/SI) in 4th. But really well done to you all for taking part all week. It wasn't easy between rain and a mini heatwave so everyone did really well.

Enjoy your well deserved rest this weekend.

Hi Everyone,

One final update before the last day of walking, running or cycling.

The effort continued yesterday which led to another big distance covered. We are now just over 600km from Newbridge. This means we are about half way across the English Channel somewhere between Dover and Calais! (I hope you are all better swimmers than me!) One final big effort today and we can see how far across Europe can we get!

The Ravens continue to be relentless in the team competition. They are walking, running and cycling like defeat is out of the question and are now about 80km clear of the second place Eagles. But remember leads like this have been overturned before. So whatever class you are in don't give up hope. Get out today and get as many kilometres in as you can!!

I am attaching some more pictures today which can be seen below!

One final push everyone! Keep up the great work.
Maria 1st and Sofia Junior Infants have been on their bikes all week. They love to cycle them out on the Curragh. Well done girls!
Eoin in 2nd class has been putting in some great miles all week. Well done Eoin!
Daniel in 3rd has been putting in an incredible effort this week. I don't think I've ever seen numbers as high as that on a smart watch! Well done Daniel and keep up the effort!

Hi Everyone,

Time for our Day 3 update.

As a group we have now travelled about 400km which roughly gets us to Newcastle in England.

In our mini competition it was a great day for the Ravens who extended their lead over the Eagles to 30km. They are now almost 50km clear of the other two teams. Great job everyone but especially to the 2nd and 3rd class groups. For the other teams remember you can still make up the ground. It is only the equivalent of 10 people doing a 5km walk, run or cycle....so it is not over yet!

Hi Everyone,

A quick update at the end of day 2. The weather has not been great over the first couple of days so it has been great to see many of you still making an effort.

Collectively as a school we have made it as far as Cork travelling just about 200km. Keep up the good work in the coming days.

The team competition is very tight with only 20km separating first and last place. Currently the Ravens are out in front (2nd/3rd classes), but they are just 2km ahead of the Eagles (JI/6th). But as mentioned with only 20km separating 1st and 4th all of the teams can still make it to the top by Friday!

Below are some people who sent pictures of their walks to accompany their distances. Well done again all and keep up the good work!

Cara 1st and Eoghan JI went walking and cycling on the Curragh
Emily 3rd Class has been busy walking on all 3 days!

Hi Everyone,

It’s time for the final Student Council challenge of the year. Seeing as it is Active Week the challenge will be an Active Challenge. The Student Council is challenging everyone to ask your families to get on their trainers and to get walking, running or cycling. We want you to record and take pictures of the distances you cover (use an app on a smart phone or smart watch) and send them to the email address as normal (r30mrlalor@snu.ie) If you don’t have one just ask your parents to record the distance covered and let us know in the email.

The challenge this week is two part. First of all we want to see how far the entire school can travel in a week. As we move through the week we will mark off any major city landmarks we reach. Dublin is only 40km away so that should be an easy target for day 1. But the challenge will run until Friday and we want to see how far we can make it from Newbridge. On Monday when sending in your email about how far you travelled, feel free to guess a city you think we might reach by Friday. We might even find a prize for anyone who guesses correctly on Monday evening.

The 2nd part of the challenge is a mini competition between 4 teams. 6th class will join forces with Junior Infants to become the Eagles, 5th class with Senior Infants to become the Hawks, 4th class with 1st class to become the Falcons, while 3rd class and 2nd class will team up and become the Ravens. We want to see which team can travel furthest in the week.

So remember you need to take a picture of the distance you covered and send it in each evening after your walk, run or cycle. Make sure to include your name and class with the picture to ensure your team gets credit for your kilometres. We will update you with the progress of the entire school each day and will let you know which of the four teams is doing best.

Have fun everyone

Irish Scones
Ingredients
3 and 1/2 cups(16 oz , 497g)of all purpose flour
5 teaspoon of baking powder,
1 pinch of salt
¼cup (60 g ) of sugar
1/2 cup (70 g) salted butter, cold

1/4 cup (60ml) double cream
3/4 cup (170ml) whole milk
milk to glaze

Instructions
1. In a large bowl mix the dry ingredients together
2. Rub in the cold butter with your fingers until it resembles breadcrumbs.
3. If adding dried fruit eg. Raisins, berries, citrus rind, chocolate chips add them now before you add liquid
4. Mix your egg with the milk and cream and pour into your flour mix (if you don’t have cream you can use only milk)
5. With an open hand mix loosely your scone mix until your dough forms. The bowl should be clean from the dough
6. Turn your dough onto a floured work surface
7. Knead lightly to give your dough a smooth surface
8. Pat your dough down with your hand until around 1 inches thick
9. With a scone cutter cut out your lovely little scones. You will have around 12
10. Put on a baking tray, glaze the tops of your scones with some milk to give them a golden top when baked
11. Bake at 350 F (18O C) for 35 minutes.
12. Enjoy with Irish butter, jam and freshly whipped cream. Scones are best eaten the day they are baked but the next day you can pop them back in the oven to freshen them up again.

Ruby in 6th class made Mars bar squares. She too send the recipe which is below. Thanks Ruby!

Ingredients:
100g unsalted butter, 4 mars bars chopped, 1 1/2 tablespoons golden syrup, 150g Rice Krispies, 350g milk Chocolate, 50g White Chocolate

Method:
1. Prepare a 20cm square baking tin, by lightly greasing it and lining it with baking paper.
2. In a heatproof bowl, heat the butter, golden syrup and 3 of the chopped Mars Bars until they have melted. Don't worry if the Mars Bars do not full melt at this point.
3. Add the Rice Krispies into the bowl and stir in with the remaining Mars Bar.
4. Pour the mixture into the baking tin and press down firmly (we used a potato masher for this)
5. In another heatproof bowl, melt the milk chocolate, stirring until smooth, then pour over the top of the Krispie mixture.
6. Moving quickly before the milk chocolate sets, melt the white chocolate and drizzle in lines up and down the surface of the Mars Bar slice. Using a skewer, drag forward and back through the mixture to create a feathered effect.
7. Place the baking tin in the fridge to chill and set. Remove a little while before you plan to serve so that it is easier to cut into squares.
