Flags for Schools Initiative
Today was an exciting day in Scoil na Naomh Uilig. Members of Óglaigh na hÉireann visited us during assembly to present us with the Irish Tricolour. The youngest member and the oldest member of the school accepted the flag on our behalf. Lieutenant Emma Harney told us that the colours of the flag had a meaning; green represents the 26 counties of the Republic of Ireland, orange represents the 6 counties in Northern Ireland and the white in the center of the flag symbolises peace.
Corporal Tony Walsh read out the 1916 Proclamation, along with two members of sixth class. The 1916 Proclamation was signed by seven men who set forth their hopes for the Irish Republic as a free state.
Lt. Harney, Lt. Áine McDonough and Cpl. Walsh then visited us in the Snowdrops after assembly. We got to ask them questions about their job and they told us about life in the army, their uniform and their medals.
