We have been learning about South Africa and Nelson Mandela. Nelson Mandela was born in 1918. At that time black people were not treated the same as white people. The were not even allowed to use the same facilities as white people. Nelson's real name was Rolihlahla but when he was in school he was given the English name Nelson by his teachers. Nelson recieved a good education, even going to university. He became active in the anti apartheid movement. He joined the African National Congress in 1942. In 1964 Nelson Mandela was arrested and taken to prison. He spent 27 years there. He was released in 1990. In 1994 he was elected president. He was the first black president in South Africa and served until 1999. Nelson Mandela passed away on the 5th of December 2013 of old age.
