1916 Flag Presentation

14/10/2015

Earlier today, three members of the Defence Forces came to our school. They came to give us an Irish flag and a copy of the 1916 ‘Proclamation of the Irish Republic’. Every school in Ireland is getting them because 2016 marks 100 years since the Easter Rising.
First, they explained how to look after the flag. There are lots of rules about it. For example, you are not allowed to let the flag touch the ground. Also, you are not allowed to draw or write on it! They also explained the meaning of the tri colour; the green represents the 26 counties of the Republic, the orange represents the 6 counties of Northern Ireland and the white represents peace in Ireland.
Next, they told us about the Proclamation. There were seven people who signed it in 1916. Lee and Ethan read the Proclamation.
After that, the flag and Proclamation were presented to Klaudia and Orla.
Lastly, they told us that on March 15 2016, at midday, all the schools in Ireland will raise their flags to mark the 1916 Rising.
We’re all really excited about raising the flag next year and about learning more about 1916!

Here is a copy of the 1916 Proclamation and below are some photos of the ceremony.
Here are some photos of the Presentation Ceremony.

During Assembly on October 14th,  Orla (Jr. Infants) and Klaudia (6th Class) received the Tricolour on behalf of the school. Ethan and Lee (6th Class) read part of the 1916 Proclamation. One of our parents, Comdt. Niall Verling (right) joined us too.  Pictured with Ms. Duggan (Principal) is the presentation party from the Curragh Camp: Lt. Emma Harney, Cpl. Tony Walsh & Lt. Áine McDonough.

6th October 2015

Procedures for the nomination/election of parents for appointment by the Patron as
parent nominees to the Board of Management

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The current Board of Management of Scoil na Naomh Uilig comes to the end of its four year term this November. A new Board of Management takes up office in December.

You are invited to a meeting in the school on Wednesday 21st  October at 7.30 p.m. The election of parent nominees to the new Board will take place at this meeting. Each parent present is entitled to nominate and to vote. The rules and procedures for nominating candidates and for the conduct of the ballot will be explained at the start of the meeting.

As the election of parent nominees is the only item of business on the agenda it is unlikely to be a long meeting. Nevertheless it is an important one and I hope you can attend.

Yours sincerely,
