Digital Literacy
Digital literacy continues to play a very important role in daily school life in Scoil na Naomh Uilig. Over the last number of years, our Board of Management has invested significantly in the digital infrastructures within the school. Interactive whiteboards are a feature in our mainstream and SEN classrooms. We also have a class set of laptops, a class set of iPads, a set of Beebots and our SEN and SET rooms have access to an iPad.
We continue to build on the resources in place for the benefit of our pupils and staff. Please see some of the most recent projects we have been working on:

Ireland's Future Is Mine

Please see the above link for the entry video from The Shamrocks, 4th Class in Scoil Na Naomh Uilig, Newbridge, Co. Kildare for RTÉ Dreamspace Minecraft Education Edition 'Ireland's Future Is Mine' competition Well done to Mr. O'Toole and the children, we think their entry is amazing!
An explanation of the project from The Shamrocks:
When our teacher told us that we were going to take part in the RTÉ & Dream Space competition using Minecraft Education Edition we were ecstatic.
To begin with we looked at what sustainability meant and looked for examples so that we could make better informed decisions when it came to designing our project and considering what elements to include.
Instead of redesigning the whole town we decided to focus on our school first and use it as an example on how changes could be made that would have a positive effect on our environment.
We looked at various foods and saw that so many were being imported into the country. We felt we could do something about it. We decided to include growing foods sustainably in our project.
We have over 600 pupils in our school Scoil Na Naomh Uilig and we felt we could all benefit from providing food to the school community.
The problem we had was where could we grow the food? We don’t have any space on our school grounds. Or do we?
What about the roof? Problem solved, we could make a roof garden. We set about recreating our school building in Minecraft. We each took different rooms and fitted them out like our actual classrooms.
We broke up into our pods to collaborate on a design and planted crops on the roof. We put water tanks on the roof to gather rainwater which we would use for watering the crops and used some creative commands to allow the water to flow from the roof.
We decided to replace our playground and plant food there instead and to keep chickens which would then provide us with fresh eggs. We created a wild flower garden and put in some beehives so the bees could pollinate the flowers and we could get honey.
We used the space out the front of the school to plant trees and shrubs etc. to help produce oxygen and offset our carbon footprint. We installed solar panels on some roof tops to help power our building and we also installed some wind turbines as an alternative way of creating energy which could also help power the school. We
We feel our project highlights ways that we could transform our area and help create a more sustainable environment. We learned to incorporate different subjects and draw on existing skills while learning new ones from our classmates.
We found the experience to be educational and lots of fun.
We hope you enjoy the video as much as we enjoyed creating it.
